{"id":623,"date":"2013-03-01T12:25:32","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T16:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/?p=623"},"modified":"2013-03-01T12:25:32","modified_gmt":"2013-03-01T16:25:32","slug":"2013-missouri-trip-day-2-indianapolis-to-columbia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/missouri-trip\/2013-missouri-trip-day-2-indianapolis-to-columbia\/","title":{"rendered":"2013 Missouri Trip:  Day 2:  Indianapolis to Columbia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Thursday, February 28):\u00c2\u00a0 After a good night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rest at the La Quinta, we leisurely got up, ran through our morning routines and breakfast, checked some emails, and loaded up the car for departure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10:36 am EST:\u00c2\u00a0 Left La Quinta Inn, Eastern Indianapolis, Indiana.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 Temperature at 35 degrees F.\u00c2\u00a0 Weather was cloudy with a misty rain.\u00c2\u00a0 308.0 miles from home.\u00c2\u00a0 We cranked up Pink\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Greatest Hits on the iPod and zoomed on our way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">After I (David) handled all the driving on the first day, Sue took over for the second day of the trip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9104.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9104\" alt=\"IMG_9104\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9104_thumb.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>12:03 pm EST \/ 11:03 am CST:<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 After passing by Terre Haute with barely a glance, we crossed into Illinois, and switched over to the Central Time Zone.\u00c2\u00a0 404.2 miles from home, grooving to Johnny Cash\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hits album.\u00c2\u00a0 Cloudy, 39 degrees F.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9107.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9107\" alt=\"IMG_9107\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9107_thumb.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"376\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This area of Illinois is flat.\u00c2\u00a0 Really flat.\u00c2\u00a0 Even the GPS unit, which have named &#8220;Nigel&#8221;, was dull.\u00c2\u00a0 Just a straight purple line for most of this leg of the trip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9109.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9109\" alt=\"IMG_9109\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9109_thumb.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>12:51 pm EST \/ 11:51 am CST:\u00c2\u00a0 We reached Effingham, Illinois <\/strong>(\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Crossroads of Opportunity\u00e2\u20ac\u009d).\u00c2\u00a0 This is one of the larger cities between Terre Haute and St. Louis.\u00c2\u00a0 We were hungry, we needed a pit stop, and the car needed gas, so we exited I-70 here.\u00c2\u00a0 Temperature at 37 degrees F.\u00c2\u00a0 Gas $3.80 per gallon.\u00c2\u00a0 463.0 miles from home.<\/p>\n<p>Chowed down for lunch at KFC.\u00c2\u00a0 Not the healthiest food, but safe travelling food for sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1:53 pm EST \/ 12:53 CST:\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>Back on the road.\u00c2\u00a0 Temperature at 36 degrees F.<\/p>\n<p>Just outside Effingham is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Cross\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a moment of Christian inspiration directly next to I-70 near the intersection with I-57.\u00c2\u00a0 Here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s our shot of it from the highway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9113.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9113\" alt=\"IMG_9113\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9113_thumb.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the photo above, you can see the overcast skies we faced for the entire trip.\u00c2\u00a0 To learn more about \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Cross\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecross-photo.com\/The_Cross_in_Effingham_Illinois.htm\" target=\"_blank\">click here to visit their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next stop, the St. Louis area in just under 90 miles.<\/p>\n<p>About 20 miles outside of St. Louis, we opted to take I-270 and cross the Mississippi River north of St. Louis rather than passing through the city proper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3:16 pm EST \/ 2:16 CST:\u00c2\u00a0 Finally, after 557 miles on the road, we crossed the mighty Mississippi River into Missouri on I-270 west!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9121.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9121\" alt=\"IMG_9121\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9121_thumb.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"395\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a bit of a thrill to cross this great waterway again.\u00c2\u00a0 There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s so much history tied to this river.\u00c2\u00a0 Lewis &amp; Clark discovering it.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s use as a commerce channel to move goods North and South.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s folklore in the writings of Mark Twain.<\/p>\n<p>Not long after crossing the Mississippi, we got caught up in a major traffic slowdown on I-270 as the road merged back with I-70 West. \u00c2\u00a0Nigel alerted us to the construction zone, and as you can see on Nigel&#8217;s screen below, we were only travelling 8.3 miles\/hour in this traffic backup.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9128\" alt=\"IMG_9128\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9128.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Turns out the backup was due to construction work on the bridges over the Missouri River.\u00c2\u00a0 Apparently the highway administration is rebuilding the westbound bridge over the Missouri.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9131\" alt=\"IMG_9131\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9131.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9132\" alt=\"IMG_9132\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9132.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were very disappointed at the lack of snow covering for most of the trip. \u00c2\u00a0Even in this area of I-70 in Missouri, just north of St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9141\" alt=\"IMG_9141\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9141.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We paused briefly for a rest stop at 3:55 pm EST (2:55 pm CST) at exit 225 off I-70 at a Hampton Inn. We were about 580 miles from home, and the current temperature reading on the RAV was 36 F. \u00c2\u00a0We got back on the road at 4:15 pm EST (3:15 pm CST), still listening to U2&#8217;s Greatest Hits on the iPod.<\/p>\n<p>An oddity that we did not capture a photo of was a bicyclist (!) in the left berm along the concrete median wall on I-70. We hope he made it alive to where he was going.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until we were almost half-way to Columbia from St. Louis, at about mile marker 199 at about 4:43 pm EST (3:43 pm CST), that we saw consistent snow covering the ground.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9143\" alt=\"IMG_9143\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9143.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"IMG_9145\" alt=\"IMG_9145\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_9145.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were off and on flurries during the rest of the drive to Columbia, but the road was cleared down to the pavement, so driving conditions were just fine.<\/p>\n<p>We got off I-70 at Exit 131 per Nigel (we are using our GPS using a British accented male voice). \u00c2\u00a0We paused briefly at a Holiday Inn with a conference center for a rest stop at 5:36 pm EST (4:36 pm CST), about 672 miles from home. \u00c2\u00a0Flurries, but roads were cleared.
