On Friday afternoon and evening, December 2, we were hit with a big “Lake Effect” snow system which dumped 18 inches of snow on us.\u00c2\u00a0 Lake Effect snows happen when cold water blows over the warm water of Lake Erie.\u00c2\u00a0 We usually get a few big snowstorms each year, since we live in the “snow belt” of Northeast Ohio.<\/p>\n

Here are some pictures from the first big snowstorm of the season.<\/p>\n

The picture at right shows the snow drift as seen from our family room through the door to our little deck porch.\u00c2\u00a0 Note how the snow drift is high up on the glass!\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is our front porch before we started shoveling.\u00c2\u00a0 This picture was taken around 7:00 pm.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sue was home for the day, and was able to clear off the driveway skirt so David could pull the car in off the main road.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a picture of the car stranded down at the end of the driveway.\u00c2\u00a0 We still have to clear off all the snow between the garage and the driveway skirt.\u00c2\u00a0 This process would take us about 2 hours.<\/p>\n

In total, we had about 18 inches of snow as demonstrated on this customized snow measuring stick from Mom & Dad Caban. The little snowman at the top of the stick is at the 18″ mark.<\/p>\n

The next morning (Sue’s Birthday), we had plenty of squirrels searching for peanut and sunflower seeds.\u00c2\u00a0 Here’s a squirrel nibbling on a “squirrel log”, which is a compressed corn log.<\/p>\n

Here’s what the view looked like from our family room, looking at the back of the garage.\u00c2\u00a0 This is “post-shovelling”, so the height of some of the drifts has been diminished.<\/p>\n

And, finally, here’s a picture out our kitchen window, looking at the railing to our little backyard deck\/porch.\u00c2\u00a0 Quite a snow!<\/p>\n
