{"id":165,"date":"2007-04-15T12:05:35","date_gmt":"2007-04-15T17:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/davids-world\/eggshelland-easter-display-2007\/"},"modified":"2007-04-15T17:37:07","modified_gmt":"2007-04-15T22:37:07","slug":"eggshelland-easter-display-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/miscellaneous\/eggshelland-easter-display-2007\/","title":{"rendered":"Eggshelland Easter Display: 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a world-famous Easter display in our hometown of Lyndhurst, Ohio.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps you&#8217;ve seen it on TV sometime in the last few years.\u00c2\u00a0 In 2006, it was shown on The Today Show.\u00c2\u00a0 This year, CNN showed it on the morning of Easter Sunday.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s called Eggshelland!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image155\" alt=\"Eggshelland, Lyndhurst, Ohio\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4009-eggshellandmainsign.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Each year, Ron and Betty Manolio of Lyndhurst, Ohio, put forth a herculean effort to create a fresh and original set of displays made from colored eggshells.\u00c2\u00a0 This year marks the 50th anniversary of Eggshelland, so the Manolio&#8217;s made sure they used over 50,000 shells in the displays.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image156\" alt=\"Eggshelland 2007 50th Anniversary\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4012-eggshellandnumeggs.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the final result looks like from the air!\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Those displays are all made from colored eggshells! <\/strong>(Thanks go to the Lyndhurst Fire Department for taking this picture.)\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image157\" alt=\"Eggshelland from the air!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/eggland2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Betty and Ron Monolio, the creators of Eggshelland, were kind enough to pose for a picture when we visited the displays.\u00c2\u00a0 Ron&#8217;s even wearing an Eggshelland Hat!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image158\" alt=\"Ron &#038; Betty Manolio - Curators of Eggshelland\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4025-eggshelland-ronbetty.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Each year Betty and Ron set up an information booth in their garage, complete with photos from previous years, newspaper clippings, and other information about Eggshelland.\u00c2\u00a0 You can even buy shells!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image167\" alt=\"Examples of eggshells used for the displays\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4018-eggshellandgarage.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the Eggshelland displays are created:<\/p>\n<p>First, the Manolios come up with a theme.\u00c2\u00a0 The theme for 2007 is &#8220;<strong>A Blast from the Past<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Once they have a theme, Betty draws a plan for the displays on a special piece of paper covered with a grid of small boxes.\u00c2\u00a0 She and Ron color the picture and then count up the number of eggs required, and the colors needed.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s this year&#8217;s plan for the Jetsons display:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image159\" alt=\"Eggshelland - Jetsons Plan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4019-eggshelland-plans2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then, Ron and Betty make sure they have enough shells of the required colors on-hand.\u00c2\u00a0 They have a wonderful deal to get extra-large eggshells from a local restaurant.\u00c2\u00a0 They paint each shell <strong><em>by hand <\/em><\/strong>with a special colorful enamel paint.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, they layout the grid of the drawing and start placing little eggshell support sticks in the ground.\u00c2\u00a0 The eggshells are then placed over the sticks.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When all is finished &#8230; this is what the result looks like!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image160\" alt=\"Eggshelland - The Jetsons\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4005-eggshelland1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, here are the other special Eggshelland displays for 2007 &#8230; a Scooby-Doo display, and a Flintstones display.\u00c2\u00a0 Below are Betty and Ron&#8217;s plans for the displays:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image161\" alt=\"Eggshell Land Planning Pages\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4016-eggshelland-plans1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here are the final results.\u00c2\u00a0 First, Scooby and Shaggy!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image162\" alt=\"Scooby Doo and Shaggy in Eggshells\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4014-eggshelland-scoobyshaggy.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then, The Flintstones!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image163\" alt=\"The Flintstones in Eggshells!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4011-eggshelland-flintstonees.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The displays are up each\u00c2\u00a0year from Palm Sunday to just after Easter.\u00c2\u00a0 However, this year was a bit different.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Eggshelland,\u00c2\u00a0our dear\u00c2\u00a0city of Lyndhurst\u00c2\u00a0in Northeast Ohio was blanketed with over two feet of heavy snow over Easter\u00c2\u00a0weekend (April 8th)!\u00c2\u00a0 So,\u00c2\u00a0the Manolios couldn&#8217;t take down the display on the day after Easter.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact, we had such bad weather during the Palm Sunday-Easter week, that very few people really got to see the displays at all!\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The snow didn&#8217;t melt enough to see the displays until the Thursday after Easter.\u00c2\u00a0 So, the Manolios graciously extended the life of the 2007 display until April 24th.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We saw the Display on April 14th, and the damage from the heavy snow was evident throughout the display.\u00c2\u00a0 Here you can see how the snow pushed down the eggshells on their support sticks so hard that the sticks poked through and broke the shells.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image164\" alt=\"Broken Eggshells at Eggshell land\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cabanonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/4027-eggshellandbroken.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ron Manolio reports that there were other years when the displays were damaged.\u00c2\u00a0 In 1998, a hail storm destroyed 10,238 shells.
